Literary Analysis of Chinua Achebe’s Marriage Is a Private Affair

Image result for Chinua Achebe "Marriage is a Private Affair"

Chinua Achebe’s “Marriage is a private affair” is a story of  a young man Nnaemeka and and young woman Nene who are from different tribes but both lived in Lagos, Nigeria. They were both faced with the challenges of inter-ethnic relationship/marriage. As they were both planning to get married, Nene thought it was important for Nnaemeka to notify his father about it, however, the father had gone against his proposal to marry someone who is not Ibo as the father had already found someone of the same tribe with good manners for his son Nnaemeka. Chinua Achebe being one of the legendary writer from Nigeria wrote this story at a time when there was no love between the major ethnic groups in Nigeria leading to inter-ethnic marriage being totally condemned. I believe his sole purpose for writing this story was to unify Nigeria through marriage. This analysis will evaluate the theme, setting, plot, characterization, point of view, irony, and symbolism in Achebe’s short story “Marriage Is a Private Affair”.

THEME

The theme of the story “Marriage is a private affair” are independence, determination, tradition and ethnic differences. According to the story,  Nnaemeka made a determination to marry Nene knowing the consequences of his actions may hurt his father Okeke but eventually will give in to their marriage. The whole story was centered around the fact that Nene was not Ibo resulting to ethnic differences even among his friend’s wife. It was a barrier Nene had to break to show that ethnicity should not be a factor for not marrying someone you love.

Even though it has been the tradition that they get married to someone of the same ethnic group, Nnaemeka and Nene’s marriage has been able to show that a successful marriage has nothing to do with ethnic backgrounds as they were the happiest couple among their peers.

SETTING

Image result for lagos

Image result for igbo villageThe setting of this story first occurred in the modern city of Lagos in Nigeria in the African continent where the relationship between Nene and Nnaemeka takes place, more specifically, the story started in Nene’s room at 16 Kasanga Street in the city of Lagos. The other part of the story also occurred in the remote area in the eastern region of Nigeria where the Ibos hail from when Nnaemeka went to visit his Dad Okeke in the village to break the news of his relationship with Nene. The story written in 1952 was taken from his Girls at War and Other Stories collection .

PLOT

The plot in the story marriage is a private affair started with a minore conflict when Nene asked if Nnaemeka had written a letter to his father to inform him about their plans to get married but Nnaemeka did not as he was not confident about breaking the news to his Dad through a letter that he has found a wife and she’s not even Ibo. Image result for marriage is a private affair

The major conflict of the story was when Nnaemeka’s father told him that he has found a girl for him Ugoye who is the father’s friend’s daughter and lives in the village but Nnaemeka did not spare his Dad on that and told him he has found someone who he loves and it is not Ugoye. Nene a teacher in Lagos from Ibibio origin is the person he loves and wanted to marry. This came as a shock to Okeke as he never imagined his son standing up to him on this issue of marriage.

The climax of the story was when Okeke did not want to have anything to do with Nnaemeka and his wife due to his decision to marry Nene who was from another tribe  and would not have them come to his house. The falling action of the story took place a after 8 years of Nene and Nnaemeka’s marriage when Okeke received a letter from Nene stating that they have two sons who are now aware they have a grandfather and would want to meet him. She further pleaded in the letter to allow his grand children to meet him with father while she stays back in Lagos. This was a turning point for Okeke as he kept fighting it in his mind but knew it is a lost battle already.

CHARACTERIZATION

Image result for marriage is a private affairThe main character of the story is Okeke his reactions are quite important to the plot of the story. Okeke can be said to be a round character because all he wanted for his son was what he thinks is best not considering his son’s point of views. It can be understood from the story that Okeke is a very traditional man and also very stubborn. Nnaemeka’s character is very free and loving, as he decides to marry someone outside of his tribe, he also showed Nene unconditional love despite the fact of what they went through with his father. the way he stood by his wife throughout his father’s unpleasant behavior.  Nene’s character was positive, caring, and also very loving as she always stayed optimistic even when Nnaemeka let her know his father would not agree for them to get married.  She even begged Okeke to see his grandchildren , who had requested to meet him, and volunteered to stay home while Nnaemeka takes them to meet him.

POINT OF VIEW

The point of view of this Story was narrated in third person because the narrator of the story was not a character in the story and knows the thoughts and feelings of each character. For example in Paragraph 17 “On the second evening of his return from Lagos, Nnaemeka sat with his father under a cassia tree. This was the old man’s retreat where he went to read his Bible when the parching December sun had set and a fresh, reviving wind blew on the leaves”, readers would be able to understand the story more clearly with the narrative paragraphs explaining the thoughts and feelings that took place in the story.

IRONY

The story has an example of verbal irony and situational irony. Verbal irony was used when Okeke said “I owe it to you, my son, as a duty to show you what is right and what is wrong. Whoever put this idea into your head might as well have cut your throat”. He didn’t wish his son dead but made that statement as a form of irony.

A situational ironay was used when Okeke said in his letter to Nnaemeka that “How I wish that I had nothing to do with you either”. This is a feeling of anger in Okeke but never would he wanted that he had nothing to do with his son.

SYMBOLISM

Image result for RAIN DROPThe most significant symbol in the story of “Marriage is a private affair” was at the end when it started raining when Okeke begins to change his mind towards on Nnaemeka and Nene’s marriage. According to the story, “He tried
to hum a favorite hymn but the pattering of large raindrops on the roof broke up the tune”, This is a turning point as Okeke realises it is a lost battle.  The fact that Chinua Achebe mentions at the end of the story that Okeke feels remorse is also significant as Okeke may also be conscious that he has been wrong. Also his stubborn attitude and traditional view on marriage has resulted in creating so much isolation from his son, Nene and their two children. At the end of the story, it can be assumed that Okeke might have changed as a person as he begins to have a change of mind towards his son’s marriage to Nene.

Three Product Reviews

Hello to all my readers,

In this post, I will be doing a product review of three different products which I think will be beneficial to my male readers and also my female readers who watch out for the grooming of their men. Kindly take your time and enjoy my reviews on the following products;

#1; ZARA 7.0 EAU DE TOILETTE

IMG_2390

BACKGROUND

ZARA is popularly known for their clothing and fashion line but only a few know about Zara perfumes compared to their other fashion items. Zara perfume is mostly water based compare to others that are alcohol based. I believe the idea was for it to have a soothing feeling on the skin as compared to alcohol-based perfumes. The Zara 7.0 perfume is mostly composed of  plant products and other natural ingredients which gives mostly fruity fragrance when it is worn. The Zara 7.0 in particular has the citrus kind of scent when perceived in a room.  It is packaged in a transparent bottle and a lid that clips on it firmly. I mostly wear this in the mornings after shower as it is very refreshing and not too strong and also before heading to the gym as it keeps me smelling good even while sweating at the gym

PROS

img_2391.jpg

  • The thing you must know about this perfume is that it is very cheap and affordable and that is why I will keep wearing it.
  • It has a slick bottle which is easy to grab and does not look as cheap as it actually is.
  • It has a long-lasting smell which keeps  me refreshed through out the whole day.
  • It has a metallic lid which makes it look like an expensive perfume
  • It has a fruity but unique scent which gets people asking me what perfume am I wearing(smell different and stand out)

CONS

  • Sometimes I have to press more than twice on my body in other to get the fragrance to fill the room.
  • You can mostly only find this in Zara stores which makes it difficult to buy, you need to locate a Zara store to buy this or you shop for it online.
  • It has a round shape which rolls around easily especially when you try to make it sit in one angle of your travel bag.

RECOMMENDATION

IMG_2392

I will highly recommend this perfume for men and women who want to smell good without breaking the bank. You will absolutely love this as it is worth more than the money being paid for it. Also I will recommend this for people who react to strong perfumes as this has a very subtle smell leaving you refreshed all day.

#2; BLACK IS BLACK EAU DE TOILETTE

IMG_2393BACKGROUND

Black is black for men is mostly worn by men and some ladies who love the daring smell of the perfume. It is a much stronger perfume as it has an exotic smell which makes it a more masculine fragrance. I mostly wear this when I’m not really in the mood to smell anything fruity as this has base of wooden smell in it. This is an alcohol-based perfume and you can feel this when sprayed on the skin. Also this fragrance can subdue the smell you have on the cloth before spraying the perfume on it. I usually use this perfume when i feel my cloth still smells like the laundry soap i used in washing it.

PROS

  • img_2394.jpg

Black is black for men is a cheap and affordable perfume and definitely worth more than the money.

  • Has a bottle that feels handy and easy to grab
  • It has a rectangular shape which allows it to sit firmly even while its in the travel bag
  • It has a strong fragrance which gives you a high energy mood.
  • It has a lid which clips firmly on it even when it falls from where you have put it.

CONS

  • It is not from a popular brand so sometimes when my friends see the bottle, it looks like a fake perfume.
  • It has a strong smell that can be choking if used in excess
  • The name of the perfume was painted on it which makes it look inferior, would have been better if it was inscribed on it.
  • The bottle has an opaque color that makes it difficult to know the amount of content left in it.

RECOMMENDATION

IMG_2395

I will recommend this product for lovers of strong masculine fragrance as it smells very masculine and can also boost your confidence. If you are subdue an unpleasant smell on your clothes , socks or even inside your shoes, this perfume has a rapid way of changing that smell to a more pleasing smell when sprayed on it.

#3; BEARD AND SCRUFF CREAM

IMG_2396 BACKGROUND

The Cremo beard and scruff cream is a special product for men who like to grow their beards. The usefulness of this product is to moisturize the beard and prevent it from tangling leaving it softer and easy to comb or brush. I have just used this product for the first time and really feels good on the skin around the beard area. This is a healthy product to use as it contains a lot of natural ingredients such as tee tree oil, aloe vera extract, glycerin, cocoa and some others. I have used this on my beard when it feels itching and relieves me almost immediately without using any additional product with it.

PROS

img_2399.jpg

  • It is a unique product developed for the men with beards and works perfectly without having to use any additional product with it.
  • It feels cool and subtle on the skin.
  • It moisturizes the beard almost immediately after application.
  • It can be used with any beard length or hair type.
  • It is easy to purchase as it is available in almost any store in the US.

CONS

  • I have to rub in this product properly for about 1 to 2 minutes before it is completely absorbed and therefore I’m discouraged to use it on days when I’m running late for an appointment as I do not want to leave the house two shades of beard
  • I wish they would have used a more appealing fragrance in this cream as this smells a little bit like an ointment
  • The container feels heavy, therefore I usually do no travel with this cream when I have to travel light.

RECOMMENDATION

IMG_2397In general, I will recommend this product to any man who is trying to groom their beards without having to use so many products on their beard. I will also recommend this for men who feel itchy around their beard as it relieves that almost immediately after application.

INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE

Hello friends,

In this post, I’ll be talking about the THREE MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE in my life even though I have more than three I would have loved to share but I’m limited to talk about just 3 in this post. Enjoy as you read about them!

MY FATHER

Image result for FATHER AND SONIt is not a new thing anymore as it is certainly the most common amongst male children to identify their father as the major influential person in their lives even before knowing what a role model is. Apparently, there is no one that can take up the role of a father in a man’s life.

When I was much younger, my Dad would make me go everywhere with him and I just had to get use to this. He is a very hardworking man and always remain focused on achieving his goals. This attributes of him he has imbibed in us as well to avoid being carried away by distractions. Till this day, I’m always focused and can do away with distractions for as long as I want. This has really helped me in life because it creates a mindset of knowing that nothing is non-achievable as long as you set your mind towards it. My father would always preach working hard and not relying on anyone other than yourself. This has really helped me this far and will continue to appreciate him for that.

My father is never the one to neglect his child even when you think you are failing or not doing well. He is that kind of father that will keep encouraging you when nobody does and this can be uplifting. His continuous encouragement is to tell you that giving up is not an option and that you are close to achieving your goal with just a little more effort and doing away with distractions.

MY TEACHER

My teacher “Ms. Alice” way back when I was in kindergarten is one woman I will never forget as she triggered the love for Arts in me. I would have probably count myself as one of those without talents if I had not discovered this. She would make us do a lot of paintings and drawings and I always loved it as I could have fun doing this all the time. While I was younger, I use to think arts is basically just about drawing and painting. Growing to become wiser I realized it’s more than just those, Arts exists in everything around us.

Over the past years, i always feel a special connection with a piece of Artwork that interprets emotions such as love, happiness, sadness, loneliness….etc. Only Artists and Art lovers would really understand this deep meanings an Art depicts while others might just see it as an ordinary piece not knowing it might be a reflection of their lives.

IMG_20150628_131604

I’m glad Ms. Alice was able to trigger my love for arts as it has really been a source of inspiration, joy and motivation. One of the ways i get out being depressed or sad about anything is to getting myself to draw or paint or any form of artwork I feel will best express my feelings at the time. This is one of my drawings of a couple of years ago. I remember feeling lonely and bored on this day and brought out my pencil and crayon and it resulted to this.  I will continue to remember Ms Alice for the great influence she’s had in life.

MR DANGOTE

According to 2018 Forbes list, Mr Aliko Dangote has been identified as the richest black man in the world. His story is really motivational and inspirational to me which made me look up to him as one of my role models. He started from little beginnings and now the richest black man in the world with net worth of $18.6 billion. He has always been interested in business from the time he was in Elementary school during which he started by buying and selling candies. To me there is a very important lesson to learn here, your starting point should not discourage you, it should motivate you and be consistent. This leads to the rules of success according to Aliko Dangote and I think it is important to share this with you.

Image result for about aliko dangote

The first thing he mentioned in one of his interviews a few years ago was to be a good listener and always practice teamwork. I have always noticed that listening more and will always allow you time to process the information in order to have the best  idea or solution to a problem. He also mentioned Consistency as a way to achieve growth. In this journey called life, there will always be challenges and therefore the ability to remain true and consistent to your practice will make you overcome this challenges resulting into a successful business.

Another attributes Dangote believes is key to success is to be focused. His success definitely did not happen overnight. This happened after several years of staying focused and committed to what he believed in. In his exact words he said something I will never forget, “You should not take your job or business as something that you must do, you must take it as it is part of your hobby, if it is part of your hobby then you do it better”. I am still a work in progress but I try my best to enjoy whatever I find myself doing.

I have learnt from my Dad and Mr Aliko Dangote that by staying focused, you are closer to achieving your dreams sooner than you think. Thanks for reading guys!

I have tasted the Nigerian Jollof rice, Ghanaian Jollof rice, Mali Jollof rice Gabonese Jollof rice and Cameroon Jollof and they all tasted so good. They have common ingredients like peppers, tomatoes, rice ,onions, seasonings, carrots.
